For years readers asking for hardcovers and Amazon recently launched their laminated hardcover print on demand service. I've just ordered proofs for myself, but I've seen this print style before. Instead of having a loose dust cover over a hardcover book without any graphics, they print the images directly on a similarly rigid cover then laminate it so it comes out glossy and resilient. It's similar to what you find on many textbooks or books that have been sold in the past as "Library Editions." I love collecting those durable hardcovers, so I've made the final edits of Spinward Fringe Broadcast 0: Origins and Spinward Fringe Broadcast 1: Resurrection available in those formats.
That's right, I said "Final Edit." After years of work and one final, careful pass leading up to the audiobook production of both those books, they're finally in their final state. In the case of Broadcast 1, a few thousand words were also added, but nothing was changed in terms of tone or story in either one. I'm proud of the work my editors and I have done.
There are two other covers at the top of this post, and they're present because these books were overlooked in terms of paperback release. I don't think there was ever a release for Carnie's Tale, and it wasn't because I dislike the book. It's one of my favourites, actually, I just didn't see it as a priority because it was a side novel until recently. After re-reading it years ago, I thought it deserved a place in the series, so it was renamed "Spinward Fringe Broadcast 10.5: Carnie's Tale" so it could have a clear place in the saga. Now it's available in 9"x6" premium paperback and I can't wait to have a copy for my shelf.
Spinward Fringe Broadcast 11: Revenge was briefly released in paperback, and I trusted Amazon's Cover Creator with formatting the spine. After I got a delayed proof copy, I pulled it back down because it looked absolutely awful. It took me way too long, but I eventually got around to designing my own spine and back for it, and it'll remain available in paperback forevermore.
Why does it take me so long to get around to this stuff? Well, I'm a writer first. I've never been great at selling my own stuff, or at least I've never been eager about it. Some authors can just stand behind a booth and sling paper as though they know everyone walking by will love their work. For all I know, it's true, so I've purchased a few really good and a lot of really bad books from super confident people.
Putting that aside, I've never been one of those guys. Even if it were true and I knew my books were the best thing ever for every potential reader - they're not. I'm good, but no one is that good - I still wouldn't have that salesmanship, that pro presenter confidence. I'm good with it, especially since I'm often suprised when someone tells me that they really want to buy my books. I'm like a goldfish that way; I have little capability to retain the idea that my work is wanted.
On the other hand, there are few things I wouldn't do to make sure that the people who buy my books and enjoy them don't eventually get what they want unless it's eternal happiness for all the characters in my fiction. That one's out of reach, folks, because I like drama between the pages, and that's where I generally know what I'm doing these days.
To sum up - this author will never be a great salesman, and I hope you enjoy these new versions of the books. I don't think the hardcovers are widely available just yet, but Amazon will probably expand their reach if enough paper moves.
Also, before I post a pile of links, I'd like to say thank you. My sales are in the dumps right now, most Inde Authors who deal with Amazon have seen a major drop lately, but the lights are still on and I'm still putting several chapters out a week while I develop the next few Spinward Fringe novels. So.... thanks! You're superior supporters!
